Meral is  Andrew R. Jennings Professor of Computing  of the Department of  Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Case Western Reserve University. She joined the Computer Engineering and Science department at Case in 1980. Her research papers appeared in many journals and conferences including  ACM TODS, JCSS, IEEE TKDE, IEEE TSE, VLDB Journal, Information Sciences, Journal of Multimedia Tools and conference proceedings, including ACM SIGMOD, ACM PODS, VLDB, IEEE ICDE, and SSDBM. 

Meral holds a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from University of Alberta, and B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, and M.Sc. in Computer Science from Middle East Technical University.

She is an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions of Database Systems, and IEEE Data Engineering Bulletin and has served previously as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering and the WWW journal. She is one of the founding members of Case Center for Computational Genomics, and Database Research Group at Case.  

Meral's primary work and research interests are in the areas of query languages and query processing, data models, and index structures in object oriented databases, multimedia databases, and temporal databases with applications in Bioinformatics. Her recent research includes utilizing distance based index structures for similarity search, modeling, querying and visualizing genomic pathways, query processing for structured data such as XML, pedigree structures,  pathway graphs. She is a recipient of several awards including IBM Faculty Award,  NSF Faculty Award for Women (FAW) and Distinguished Alumni Award from University of Alberta. She is currently a member of VLDB Board of Trustees.
